Udaipur, ‘The City of Lakes’ is one of the most charismatic cities in the state of Rajasthan. Mostly inhabited by the Bhil tribe, it has tourists flocking towards it in large number. Although the temperature in here is humid, the palaces built in Rajput style make for a pleasant scene along with the lakes. But the best time to visit this place is from September to March when the weather is comparatively cooler. The Bhil community has kept the traditions alive with its festivals and fairs which are the main draws of the place.
The Udaipur Palace is by far the main attraction in here with destinations within the palace. They include Amar Vilas, Badi Mahal, Durbar Hall, Fatehprakash Palace, Jagadish Temple, Manak Mahal, Mor Chowk or Peacock Square, Zenana Mahal or Women's Palace, Rang Bhawan, Sheesh Mahal among the many others. Udaipur city is known for its lakes, the important ones being Fateh Sagar Lake and Pichola Lake. No wonder, it is also known as the “Most Romantic City in India”. The other places for sightseeing in Udaipur are Saheliyon ki Badi, Sukhadia Circle, Udaipur Solar Observatory, Gulab Bagh and Zoo, Doodh Talai, Nehru Garden, Bagore-ki-Haveli, Ahar Museum and Aapni Dhani.
Horse carts are the cheapest modes of transport here and what better way to explore this enchanting city. Also there is horseback riding apart from camel riding which is everybody’s favorite sport here. Puppet and theatre shows are one of the main art forms in this city and hence must be seen at least once. Mewar festival is one of the many festivals which cannot be missed either.
One of the many ways of reaching Udaipur is from the Maharana Pratap Airport which handles all domestic flights from Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur. There are also railway lines from Delhi and Jaipur leading directly to the railway terminal. The easiest means of travelling is of course on roadways from all parts of Rajasthan and also from Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
